Which means people are going to have to decide how to levy taxes, and a mechanism to collect them (attempting to do so fairly and investigate tax fraud cases)ĭo you want to live in a world where those things don’t exist at all?ĭoes government get bloated, manipulated, corrupted? Yes. A national military to protect us from foreign invaders. Then we’re going to hire a police force to enforce the laws, courts to provide due process and final judgement, and a mechanism to enforce punishment - whatever that may be. We’re going to make up laws to punish people who are physically violent against others, or steal/damage property. It’s not a practical or rational way to live. It’s crazy to me how people focus in on the government as if it were the sole source of all the problems in their lives. In criminal justice government does not protect, they punish to make the victim feel better, this is something but it has nothing to do with freedom or protection. Mostly the government does these things "for the greater good", like with the above example as it pertains to race, or sex or orientation, but the libertarian view is that all these infringements do much more hard than good over the long run as it's always a slippery slope but most importantly culture drives government to do things like this so by the time they get involved, it's unnecessary as it is on its way to not being a thing already, peacefully and voluntary. For example, government routinely infringes on the right of association of people by forcing said association, this happens on a personal and business level, it's just harder to notice on a personal level. However, the government can "protect" your freedoms as defined by the government itself, from outside forces as well as internal forces, but this rarely happens, and most of the time when government gets involved, they absolutely infringe on a negative freedom to provide some new found positive freedom. The OP said "governmen't cannot provide freedom, via decree or law or whatnot, the OP's point was that every action the gov't does chips away at freedoms. I felt the need to ensure that a clear, repetitious, emphatic definition was given: Discussing the moral justification or necessity for governance isn't what I want to do here. At the foundational level, your Mom and Dad, governing your early existence, reduced your individual liberty. Municipal, regional, provincial, state, federal, corporate.

To note, I keep using the word Government-capital G and all-because I'm not referring to the Federal Government of the United States of America, or the Provincial Government of British Columbia, or any such, specific entity. All invocations of Government reduce individual liberty. It disgusts me that there's talk of "expanding civil liberties" or "protecting minorities" by expanding Government control. Too often, and too bizarrely, it seems to me that people talk about personal liberty as if it is authored by the state. What disturbs me is that, to others, this might be an insightful definition. To some this will be preaching to the choir.

Every action of Government reduces, restricts, removes, or penalizes the freedom(s) of individuals.

The Government cannot, by its very construction and definition, provide freedom or 'freedoms.' Doing so is exactly antithetical to the role of Government in the life of an individual.
LABELIST DEFINITION FREE
In other words: when we are Free, we are free from Government. A man with maximum freedom is ungoverned, and a man with no freedom is locked in a cage by the State. Achieving maximum Freedom requires you totally escape government. As the role of Government in your life grows, your freedom shrinks. the power to determine action without restraint - personal liberty, as opposed to bondage or slaveryĪs I follow discussions across many subreddits, watch videos, and listen to podcasts, and hear, day after day, the word Freedom thrown around, it's becoming more and more clear to me that the overwhelming majority of people fail to understand the most rudimentary and fundamental truth about Freedom: Freedom is a measure of how much Government there is in your life. Freedom - the state of being free or at liberty rather than in confinement or under physical restraint - exemption from external control, interference, regulation, etc.
